Sizes of instruments:
Adults use Full size (written as 4/4); usually 12yrs old and up
3/4 size violin 10-11 yr olds
1/2 size 8-9yrs
1/8th size 5yr-8yr olds
violins do come in smaller sizes 1/10th and 1/16th
Purchasing a Violin
Beware of cheap instruments for sale! (many Internet string instruments are Very poor quality!) When the quality of an instrument is poor, it makes it more difficult for your child to play and enjoy.
If you are purchasing an instrument it is sometimes better to buy a good quality used string instrument than a cheaper brand new one. You may wish to rent an instrument before you decide to purchase one.
Most music stores have good quality violins on hand and can walk you through the process. Below you will find a list of music shops in the area for purchasing or renting your instrument.
It is essential that the instrument is the correct size for the student. An instrument that is too large or small makes learning more difficult and sometimes frustrating and the child will not be encouraged to practice!
All string instruments should include a case, bow (rosin for the bow optional) and fine tuners for all 4 strings. Cellos and Bass need rock stops, and Violins and Violas will need sponges or shoulder rests. Most often the teacher will supply sponges if students do not have shoulder rests at one of the first classes.
The shoulder rest comes in all different sizes and prices just make sure the size fits the violin! You may wish to purchase a metal music stand, (around $15.00 Sam Ash music stores) for students to use for practice at home. This promotes the development of proper playing position.
